What is Bikram Yoga?

What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga is a demanding series of 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises (pranayamas), which is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture.
The Bikram method also stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 percent of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order.

Bikram scientifically designed this 90-minute program to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss, and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the series of postures combines skills of concentration, patience, determination and self-control, which increases mental clarity and reduces stress.
Bikram yoga is practiced in a heated room to warm your muscles and prevent injury. It allows a deeper workout and cleanse the body by flushing toxins.

How does Bikram help to reverse the Aging Process?

Reversing the Aging Process

As we age our muscles tend to get stiffer, creating more pressure on the joints. By regular stretching we prevent this gradual stiffening and joint deterioration and that is why yoga has a rejuvenating effect. Through a regular yoga workout vast amounts of energy are liberated which we can use in our lives to feel more alive and self-fulfilled. The result: we look, move and feel younge

How does Bikram balance the Body?

Balancing the Body to its Natural State

The poses work synergistically and cumulatively to restore the body to a balanced state. The yoga builds energy, stamina and flexibility. It incorporates strength, gravity and balance and most importantly the tourniquet effect. This technique allows the stretching, squeezing and massaging of the internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems in order to release deficient hormones and enzymes. The body is self-regulating and self-adjusting.

What if I have never done yoga before?

What if I have never done yoga before?

Welcome! Every class is open to beginners and follows the same format whether it is your first class or your fifth year practicing. Everyone benefits. As Bikram says: “This Hatha yoga is for everyone and every body. It doesn’t matter how well you do each posture, only that you try the right way.”

Classes are open to those aged between eight and 80. For your first few classes try not to expect too much of yourself, allow your body to acclimate to the heat.

Yoga is not a means to an end; it is a practice. Students are asked to practice to the best of their ability. New students practice alongside more advanced students. The goal of Bikram Yoga is not to twist the body into bizarre pretzel shapes, but to strengthen the body’s natural range of motion.

Yes, drink plenty of water before class.

How much is enough?

How much is enough?

This is going to vary on a person by person basis. Typically a good formula is take your body weight and divide by 2. This is how many ounces of water you should consume daily. Here’s an example: 140 lb/2 = 70 oz. 64 oz is a half gallon. Seem like a lot? Remember our bodies are mostly water. Being fully hydrated helps take pressure off of organs to do their jobs and helps flush the body and keep it running smoothly.

The most typical excuse for not drinking water is the increased visits to the restroom. Your body will adjust to the increased water intake. You may also find benefits of decreased body odor, smoother skin, and shinier hair.

Why the heated room?

Why the heated room?

The heat combined with the sequence of the postures is what makes Bikram Yoga so special. The room is heated intentionally to warm muscles, which allows you to work deeper in a shorter amount of time, seeing results faster. Heat takes the trauma out of stretching, heals and helps prevent injuries. Also, your skin is the largest elimination organ in your body. Yoga is not just about working muscles. You are massaging deep tissues, glands, organs as well. As you work deep within your body, you may start to release “poisons” or “toxins” that have been stored there a long time. Sweating helps flush toxins from your body, giving you a wonderful glow from head to toe.

What can I expect after class?

Didn’t know you had a muscle there? Congratulations, you have utilized 100% of your body. You are on the way to regaining your birthright: using your body in the full range of motion that it was designed for. Muscle soreness is a buildup of lactic acid. What’s the best way to get rid of the lactic acid? Stretching. It may seem impossible to imagine that coming back for more will help, but it is THE BEST way to relieve the soreness.

The room is heated so when you return, you will be able to stretch your muscles without the feeling of soreness. It is recommended that you drink lots of water before and after class. Come back to yoga the next day; if you wait too long to come back, then you will be starting all over again.

Is Bikram Yoga a Cardiovascular Workout?

Can I lose weight?

Can I lose weight?

Yes, if you have it to lose. Bikram says you will have a new body with 60 days of daily practice. Each posture combines flexibility, strength and balance to work your whole body from bone to skin. With a regular practice you can lose inches and develop muscle tone, strength and stamina. The postures help to release bound-fat cells and work the endocrine glands to fire up your metabolism. Warm muscles burn fat more effectively. When we stretch, the fat has no room to sit so it redistributes to the blood stream which we then use as energy. For those who wish to lose weight, Bikram recommends coming to classes earlier in the day.

No matter what your fitness level, you will find Bikram Yoga very challenging. Each posture combines flexibility, strength and balance to work your whole body from your bones to your skin. With persistence, patience, and dedication, you can lose inches and develop muscle tone and strength that might never come from other forms of exercise.

Most people do not experience dramatic weight loss according to a scale because as you are losing fat, your are building muscle mass. What you will see is a general slimming all over: your clothes fit better, your posture is better, your skin will GLOW!

What if I am not flexible?

This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, it is about stretching your body and spine in all directions. If you simply try the right way, your balance, endurance and flexibility will naturally increase. You will be receiving 100% of the benefits.
